What are X Ads?

X advertising definition: X Ads are X's paid advertising products. Advertisers create campaigns, and the paid content in those campaigns appears as Promoted Ads to the audience they select. X describes paid campaigns as a complement to an organic content strategy, not a substitute for one.

The terminology matters: the platform is X, its advertising system is X Ads, and the paid posts delivered through campaigns are Promoted Ads. Older guides may call them Twitter Ads, Promoted Tweets, or promoted accounts; use X's current Ads documentation when setting up a campaign.

How X Ads campaigns work

Campaign setup starts with a business goal. X's current campaign guide lists objectives including Reach, Video Views, Pre-Roll Views, App Installs, Engagement, and Website Traffic. The objective determines what the campaign is designed to optimize for and, for many objectives, the action on which you pay.

For example, a Reach campaign is designed to show ads to as many unique people as possible within the available budget and is priced by impressions. A Website Traffic campaign is designed to send people to a site or landing page and can optimize for link clicks or site visits. A Video Views campaign is designed to deliver video to people likely to watch it. Select the goal that matches the outcome you can measure rather than treating every campaign as a generic visibility purchase.

Audience and targeting

Targeting is the criteria used to decide who can see an ad. X says advertisers can narrow an audience by demographics, audience features, follower look-alikes, or a custom audience list. The available choices can vary by campaign, market, product, and policy, so confirm the options in the X Ads interface before committing a plan.

Targeting is useful for relevance, but it is not a promise of a result. Set a clear audience hypothesis, use creative that speaks to that audience, and review delivery and outcome data before expanding spend.

Budget, bids, and creative

X Ads use an auction: ads compete for the audience they target. Advertisers select a bid approach for most objectives and choose a daily budget during setup. X states that there is no minimum campaign spend and that its system will not exceed the daily budget set for the campaign.

Campaign structure does not replace the work of making an effective post. Build creative around a single message and a clear next step, use the relevant destination URL when traffic is the goal, and compare multiple creative versions rather than assuming one post will suit every audience.

Who can advertise on X?

Before creating a campaign, confirm that the account meets X's eligibility requirements. X requires advertiser accounts to comply with its Ads Policies. That compliance can cover the profile name, handle, profile and header images, bio, and bio URL as well as the promoted content itself.

  • Account status: posts from an advertiser account must be public. Deactivated and suspended accounts cannot participate in X Ads.
  • Verification: businesses and government entities must use Verified Organizations; individual advertisers must use X Premium.
  • Account quality: X requires a non-GIF profile and header image plus a functional, live, ungated bio URL that accurately represents the brand and promoted offering.
  • Location and policy: self-serve availability is country-specific. Ads must meet applicable language rules, and trade restrictions and sensitive events can make accounts or targeting temporarily ineligible.

Eligibility lets an account participate; it does not guarantee that every ad will run. X can review advertising content and accounts for compliance. Review the relevant policy before publishing, especially for regulated or sensitive categories.

A practical way to start

  1. Define one measurable goal, such as qualified website visits, video views, or reach.
  2. Verify that the account, business identity, destination URL, billing setup, and market are eligible for X Ads.
  3. Choose the matching campaign objective, an audience grounded in the goal, a daily budget, and a small set of distinct creative options.
  4. Review results against the selected objective, then keep, revise, or stop the campaign based on the data.

For current controls, formats, prices, and policy requirements, use X's X Ads campaigns guide and advertiser eligibility guide. These details can change, so the X Ads dashboard and official policy pages should take precedence over older articles.
